As tempted as I was to bake a cake with 267 candles, I stuck to an excellent piece of chocolate/banana cake. And of course a glass of the (by now) traditional vanilla liquor for the toast: to our beloved Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood, who was so far ahead of his times that it’s a surprise he was never painted holding a sonic screwdriver. Happy Birthday!

In related news, here’s a small article (with picture) about the replica of HMS Pickle.

Btw. in case you’ve been wondering: yes, the children’s book about Collingwood, told from his dog Bounce’s pov, has finished its planning stage and will become reality. I must say that this story would have been much easier to write if Old Cuddy had had a cat… ;-)

204 years ago today, Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood died off Port Mahon, on board of HMS Ville de Paris. Here’s what the “Annals of the Wars of the 19th Century. Vol. III” had to say on the matter. I find the comparison of Nelson and Collingwood to Saul and Jonathan most intriguing…!

Today’s picture can be shared with you thanks to the generosity of our dearest Volgivagant; who of us would not have loved to sail on the good ship “Collingwood” – with a figurehead like this?

In honour of our dear admiral – and his beloved Bounce! – we’ve made a donation to rescue four dogs from Romania, who are already on their way to new, loving homes.

“The Trafalgar Storm”

An illustrated talk to the The Collingwood Society
Dr. Dennis Wheeler, assisted by Dr. Tony Barrow

storm

Tuesday 19th November 2013:  7.30pm
The Newcastle upon Tyne Trinity House

Free for members of the Collingwood Society, £2 admission for others.

Dr. Wheeler talks about the EU research project which assembled and analysed centuries of meteorological data from RN warships, shore observing stations and merchantmen from the likes of the East India Company and Hudson Bay Company.  He then draws on the specific entries of the vessels at Trafalgar, together with those of the Cadiz naval station and vividly paints a picture of the developing storm as seen through the eyes of those at the Battle. Dr. Barrow will add some historical (and Collingwood) context, which we are confident will then generate some fascinating floor discussions and opinions.

For contact and more information, please download the flyer for this event here.

In other news: has anybody read this book? Is it any good or not?

I’m very happy to see how much attention the Collingwood Society managed to gather for Old Cuddy (and the society as well) this Trafalgar Day!
For starters, here’s a report and a short video clip of

A Toast To Admiral Collingwood: Trafalgar Day Celebrated In Tynemouth And Newcastle

Dozens of people turned out in Tynemouth to raise a glass to Admiral Collingwood, a famous Newcastle navy officer, who fought alongside Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Courtesy the Collingwood Society, here are some pictures of the event:

Please also have a look at this entry on the blog of the Catholic Parish of Morpeth, with additional pictures of handsome sailors, grog and a prayer by Fr Lawrence.

TRAFALGAR DAY AT COLLINGWOOD HOUSE

This is my favourite contribution, though. It’s so lovely to see Morpeth and put faces to names.

In other news, Bounce was mentioned on Reddit. Quite clearly, this is the end of the world as we know it.

Having just returned from a trip to very northern shores in the wee hours of Trafalgar Day and not being in a very awake state (two words: fig vodka), I still managed to raise my glass for a toast to Admiral Collingwood, alas with a glass of vanilla-croissant-scented liquor. The alternative was cherry rum, so I hope you’ll forgive me. Next year, I hope I’ll manage something more dignified…

The Newcastle upon Tyne Trinity House
followed by
“Growing up with the Admiral”
a talk by Angus Collingwood-Cameron

Ok, it’s not Angus Collingwood-Cameron, but it’s a cute girl and there’s Bounce, so this is not a completely unrelated picture. So nyah!

Also quickly approaching is Trafalgar Day; please download the Collingwood Society’s programme here.

Talking about Trafalgar: have you seen this fantabuloustastic figurehead of Old Cuddy yet?!

A decidedly Fürst-Metternich-looking Old Cuddy can be yours for a measly $20,880…

More nautical gems can be found here; I’m particularly fond of the Emperor penguin.

I admit, the Great British Bake-Off it ain’t, but I can assure you that the cake tastes much better than the icing looks.

Here’s to the noble fellow Collingwood, our dear Old Cuddy. May there be many more cakes we can eat and glasses we can empty in his honour.

As some of you know, I’ve been a bit (ok, more than a bit) under the weather these last months, health- and otherwise, and had to cut back somewhere. “Somewhere” being my online presence, and you’re rightly upset with me that Old Cuddy (as well as Joyful Molly) fell victim to my cutbackiness. It wasn’t easy to give other things priorities, as you can imagine.

But now I’m back for good, and updates will be regular again. And he’re a heads-up for the next event of the honourable Collingwood Society:
